Literacy Volunteers of Kent County, Inc.

Literacy Volunteers of Kent County (LVKC) is a non-profit organization teaching adults basic literacy and English as a foreign language with volunteer tutors. Since 1980, LVKC has provided free one-on-one tutoring to adults whose low English literacy skills prevent them from functioning effectively in their homes, workplaces, communities, or as citizens of the U.S. LVKC matches students with tutors to meet on a one-to-one basis virtually or at public places such as local library or other public institutions. We ask our volunteers to undergo a RI Background Check before meeting one-to-one with a student.

A volunteer tutor must be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate or have earned a GED, and have successfully completed the tutor training workshop. Tutor training is conducted in a series of workshops totaling a minimum of 8 hours. The training workshops are an opportunity for you to become familiar with the staff, policies, teaching techniques, and resources of LVKC. Midway through training, volunteers are matched with students so that they may experience the tutoring process and receive guidance as needed. At the conclusion of training, tutors are certified by LVKC.
