Volunteer: Become a Mentor for the Juvenile Justice Initiative!Change a child's life by becoming a mentor with MENTOR Rhode Island! The Juvenile Justice Initiative is a comprehensive approach that provides young people, particularly those of color, diversionary options to the formal justice system. Youth are referred from police, judges, hearing boards, parole officers, school personnel, family members, or others who encounter a young person at risk of entering the formal juvenile justice system. Mentors spend an hour or more per week with their mentee and attend one group mentoring meeting per month, usually taking place in the early evenings. This program spans the state of Rhode Island. MENTOR RI works with over 50 programs around the state, meaning we can help you find the unique mentoring experience that's the right fit for you! Volunteer mentors can opt to join a community or site based program. Community based programs ask mentors to spend a minimum of 4-6 hours per month with their mentee. Mentors and mentees can spend time at places like the movies, the mall, getting ice cream, and more! Site based programs occur at a designated site, like a school, and generally ask for one hour per week. These meetings occur at the same time and same day every week, making it very easy to schedule around!We are a statewide organization, but find our highest need is now in Woonsocket, Warwick, Providence, and the Aquidneck Islands.
