Volunteer: Help Combat Social Isolation! Give a Ride to an Older Adult!

We need your help on weekday mornings! Federal Hill House is committed to serving our community of older adults. We offer morning programs like our knitting circle, chair yoga, meditation, health screenings with medical professionals, and other engaging and informative activities. Following these activities, we offer a hot lunch Monday-Wednesday. While many of our seniors would benefit from these services, most do not drive, and public transportation is not always a great option.

Do you have a few hours per week to spare? Do you have a license and your own reliable vehicle?

Our folks would need to be picked up at their homes around 10am and brought to our community room located off of Atwells Avenue in Providence. After lunch, our seniors would need to be picked up around 12:30pm, and brought back home.

If you are over 55, and would like to help, you are eligible to enroll in our AmeriCorps Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). You will become a member of a like-minded network of individuals who seek to improve their communities. AmeriCorps RSVP also provides additional benefits to its members including supplemental insurance, awards for service, and others. We love to celebrate our volunteers because we appreciate the work you do!

Contact Michele Matott mmatott@federalhillhouse.org for more information on this and other opportunities!

*Federal Hill House requires all staff, volunteers, and participants in programs to provide proof of COVID vaccination.

Better Lives RI Seeks Volunteers for Food Pantry

Providence, RI — October 2024 — Better Lives Rhode Island (BLRI), a leading nonprofit dedicated to providing food and support for low-income and unhoused individuals, urgently seeks volunteers for its Downtown Food Pantry. As we recognize 50 years of service, the demand for assistance continues to rise, and volunteers are needed more than ever to help ensure that no one in the community goes hungry.

Since its establishment in 1974, Better Lives RI has provided critical support to tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders. Last year, BLRI served over 30,000 individuals, including 478 children and 247 senior citizens, through our food pantry and outreach programs. The food pantry, located at 12 Abbott Park Place, is a lifeline for over 2,100 people each month, providing essential groceries and dignity to those struggling to make ends meet.

"Volunteers are the backbone of our organization," said Paula Hudson, Executive Director of Better Lives RI. "As we celebrate 50 years of serving the community, we know that none of this would have been possible without the dedication of those who give their time and energy to help others. Now, as we face growing needs, we're calling on the community to step forward and help us continue this legacy."

How to Get Involved

To become a volunteer at the Better Lives RI Downtown Food Pantry, student organizations, administrative offices, and individuals can sign up by contacting Paula Hudson at PHudson@BetterLivesRI.org. Volunteers are needed for various shifts, with flexible options to accommodate different schedules.

As the winter months approach and food insecurity rises, your support is critical in helping us meet the needs of our community. Join us in making a difference and ensuring that everyone in Providence can access nutritious food.

Volunteer: Become a Woonsocket Mentor!

Description

Change a child's life by becoming a mentor with MENTOR Rhode Island!

Being a mentor is about communicating in a meaningful way. It’s about being yourself, sharing your experience, and your perspective on life. As a mentor, you’ll form a one-to-one relationship with a young person who needs your support and attention. You’ll be a positive role model and a trusted friend. And, as with any friendship, you’ll get a lot out of it, too.

Studies show us that at least 1 in 3 youth will grow up without a mentor. Help us close the mentoring gap for youth in Woonsocket!

Mentoring takes place for one hour per week, on school grounds and during school hours. The Woonsocket mentorship program serves youth in grades k-12 in Woonsocket Public Schools.

Mentors must complete an application, background check, reference check, and two-hour training to qualify for our program.

Please reach out to L.A. Busteed with any questions: lbusteed@mentorri.org

Mentors must complete an application, background check, reference check, and two-hour training to qualify for our program.

Volunteer: Volunteer on Farms with Hope's Harvest

Want to get your hands dirty, visit local farms, and support local communities facing food insecurity? Volunteer with us!

Hope's Harvest runs multiple 2-hour-long gleaning trips each week throughout the growing season in summer and fall at farms in RI and Southeastern MA. Each gleaning trip begins with an orientation and a harvesting demonstration for the crop(s) we are harvesting that day. Volunteers help us harvest, sort, and pack the gleaned produce for distribution.

Gleaning with us offers volunteers the opportunity to spend time outside on local farms with other volunteers and learn about local food systems while also giving back to their communities.

Register to Volunteer

Volunteers register on our website and can find volunteer opportunities for the upcoming week in our volunteer newsletter, which gets sent out every Saturday morning. There is no obligation to sign up for specific trips, and no previous training or skills are required to participate. You choose what date, time, and location works best for you.

About Hope's Harvest

Hope's Harvest, a program of Farm Fresh RI, mobilizes volunteers to rescue surplus food from local farms that would otherwise have gone to waste and distribute it to hunger relief agencies across Rhode Island. This practice, known as "gleaning," reduces food waste on farms, improves food security in our local communities, provides economic opportunities for local farmers through contracting and surplus purchasing, and improves community resilience by increasing the amount of locally grown produce consumed in RI.

Hope’s Harvest RI partners with farmers and food pantries to ensure that our friends and neighbors in need have access to fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables and our volunteers get their hands dirty making a tangible, positive difference for their communities.

Volunteer: Become a Paid Intern With Inspiring Minds

Inspiring Minds is a non-profit education agency founded in 1963 to provide academic support for children in two elementary schools. Volunteer: CASA Training for Volunteer Child Advocates (RI Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children)

CASA volunteer child advocates needed!

You can make a life-changing difference for an abused or neglected child!  The RI Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children program (CASA) is constantly seeking volunteers who can give 8 - 10 hours a month to provide a voice for children in DCYF care who are also represented by the CASA program.  Due to COVID-19, we are not running our usual schedule of in person trainings, we are considering dates for future trainings at this time.  Safety considerations are always paramount.

CASA advocates within the court system for children who, through no fault of their own, find themselves involved with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and the Family Court.   CASA works on behalf of children's best interests, to prevent them from falling through the cracks of the child welfare system that was put in place to help them.  Our volunteers are the eyes and ears of the court, visiting with children, reporting on their well-being, and ensuring that they receive necessary services.

Volunteers must complete background checks and a personal interview, in addition to the 30-hour training program. After training, volunteers are sworn in by the Court and work with CASA attorneys for the duration of their selected case.  Our volunteers play a unique role in a child's life, often becoming the only consistent adult in a child's life while their case is open in Family Court.

Help a child thrive! You can help break a cycle of abuse or neglect for a child.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.  To obtain an application with information about training, and to learn more about CASA, please visit the RI Family Court CASA homepage at: https://www.courts.ri.gov/Courts/FamilyCourt/Pages/Court Appointed Special Advocate.aspx,

If you have any questions, please email kpoli@courts.ri.gov and nmartin@courts.ri.gov.  Thank you for your interest!
